Review - Artemis Fowl: The Opal Deception by Eoin Colfer

I got this book through NetGalley.

From Goodreads: The evil pixie Opal Koboi has spent the last year in a self-induced coma, plotting her revenge on all those who foiled her attempt to destroy the LEPrecon fairy police. And Artemis Fowl is at the top of her list.

After his last run-in with the fairies, Artemis had his mind wiped of his memories of the world belowground. But they have not forgotten about him. Once again, he must stop the human and fairy worlds from colliding—only this time, Artemis faces an enemy who may have finally outsmarted him.

The Opal Deception is darker than the other three books. Someone close to the main team dies here and is not revived. Also, Opal Koboi, the bad guy in this book, plays with Holly’s feelings in a rather cruel way and frames her for the murder of her friend.

This book has some classic points that reminded me of many thrillers. When Holly is blamed for the death of her superior and friend, everybody is ready to believe what they think they are seeing. In fact, very few people question it. It doesn’t matter how much good Holly has done in the past, because as those in charge of the investigation don’t like her, she has to be guilty.

The author successfully manages to write a much more serious novel without taking out the dwarf’s jokes. After reading The Opal Deception I’m looking forward to reading Colfer’s adult crime fiction.

The best Artemis Fowl book so far and, unless the eighth book is much better, the best of the series.

  1. I know I always say I'm going to get to these some day and I will, but it makes me happy to see that all the books in the series are good. Often there's a book or two that isn't.

    1. There is a book or two that's not so good: the next ones. They are not bad, but I don't think they are as good as the first four.

  2. Very cool. Are you going to finish out the reat of the series before moving on to something else? Looking forward to your next review.

    1. I have already written the review for the next Artemis Fowl, but I wanted to finish reading and writing the review of two other books first (a Swedish crime novel and an adventure/thriller).
