Review - Artemis Fowl: The Eternity Code by Eoin Colfer

I got this book through NetGalley.

The book starts with Artemis Fowl’s last illegal activity before his father is released from the hospital. What should have been an easy job turns out to be more dangerous than Artemis or Butler thought. A meeting goes wrong and Butler is shot defending the boy but he’s only 99 % dead because of Artemis’ quick thinking and a bit of fairy magic.

Not everything is good though, because Jon Spiro, the man Artemis was meeting, steals a high-tech computer that can put the Magical Creatures in danger and Artemis is kidnapped while trying to get it back.

When compared to the Artemis of the first book, there is an evolution here, both good and bad. At the beginning of this book his self-confidence has grown so much that he makes a mistake that almost costs Butler his life (and the fairy magic does leave Butler with some negative side effects).

On the other hand, his respect for the magical creatures has grown and he doesn’t see them as inferior anymore. A bit of this is also seen in the second book and this relationship between humans and fairies / dwarves / etc will probably be developed more in later books.

The Eternity Code, unlike the first two books, starts quite fast. In the first few pages there has already been some action and Butler has been shot. Probably this book is faster than the others because Artemis doesn’t have a plan. He thought his meeting with Jon Spiro couldn’t go wrong and doesn’t have a back-up plan.

Great fast-paced adventure that won’t disappoint the fans of Artemis Fowl.

    1. I had some exams in the first two weeks of June and have been studying almost all day. But now I have three months of reading and being lazy, which will mean more reviews.

  4. I discovered the Artemis Fowl books by accident. I'd read a story by Eoin Colfer in a crime-fiction anthology and was disappointed that he'd written no other "adult" fiction. But I liked the story so much that I leapt, with some trepidation, into the Artemis Fowl books -- and enjoyed them greatly. I also liked his Half Moon Investigations, which was also YA.

    1. He has now. He wrote an adult crime fiction novel that was published last September. I haven't read it yet, but it looks good.

  5. The novel is called Plugged, and it’s darker and grittier than you might think. I read it because Colfer was on a panel I moderated at last year’s Bouchercon.
